Artificial Intelligence Robots Could Be Lonely People's Best Companion, Research

New York: A new study has found that specialized artificial intelligence robots designed to alleviate loneliness may one day help reclusive individuals.

According to global media reports, scientists from Cornell, Duke University and New Zealand’s University of Auckland have published their findings in the journal Science Robotics. Researchers found that the number of Americans who have no close friends has quadrupled since 1990.

Murali Duriswamy, a professor of psychiatry and geriatrics at Duke University, said all the evidence points to a real friend being the best solution to alleviating feelings of loneliness. But until society prioritizes social connections and care for the elderly, robots are a solution for millions of lonely people who have no other solution.

The scientists also pointed out that more and more research suggests that robots can reduce stress and loneliness and help older people stay healthy and active while at home.
