The bodies of 13 migrants were recovered from the sinking of the boat

Tunisia has recovered the bodies of 13 migrants from a boat that sank off the coast.

Tunisia’s coast guard says it has recovered the bodies of 13 African migrants and rescued 25 after their boat capsized on their way to Italy.

The tragedy occurred near the city of Sfax, but the Coast Guard did not say how far from shore the boat was when it sank.

Tunisia is facing an unprecedented migration crisis that has replaced Libya as the region’s main departure point for people fleeing poverty and conflict in Africa and the Middle East in hopes of a better life in Europe. .

The number of people who died and went missing off the coast of the North African country rose to nearly 630 in the first half of 2023, more than in any previous year, according to data compiled by Reuters.

Tunisia is under pressure from European countries to stop mass departures from its shores, but President Qais Said has said he will not act as a border guard.
