Derby, United Kingdom: A 121-year-old tin box of chocolates is going to be auctioned.
The perfectly preserved box was produced by the Cadbury Company in 1902 to celebrate the coronation of King Edward VII and Queen Alexandra.
The box of chocolates was given to nine-year-old Mary Ann Blackmore at a school in 1902, but she decided to keep the chocolates as a souvenir rather than eat them, and they were passed down through the generations in her family, eventually becoming Mary Ann. Granddaughter Jane Thompson, 72, brought the box to Henson’s auction house in Derby.
“Back then it was like a treat, the kids never got chocolate,” said Morvaine Fairlie of Hanson Auction House. It was obviously such a special gift to this little girl at the time that she thought she should keep it.
Mrs Fairley added that the price is expected to be between €100 and €150 but could be higher. Sometimes you will find some bidders who will increase the price of an item many times just because of the historical background.
