Russia has vetoed the renewal of a UN aid program in rebel-held territory in Syria.
The UN is working in Turkey for this aid program, which provides assistance to 4 million people in northwestern Syria.
A bill for a 9-month renewal of the aid program was presented to the UN Security Council, which was vetoed by Russia.
After vetoing a 9-month renewal bill, Russia proposed a 6-month extension of the aid program in Syria, which failed to pass.
Russia’s ambassador to the United Nations, Vasily Nebenzia, said that if our proposal is not supported, we will leave and close the ‘cross-border mechanism’.
US Ambassador Thomas Greenfield said that we will continue to work with all council members to renew this aid operation, and that Russia should review its position.
On the other hand, UN Secretary General Antonio Guterres proposed a 12-month extension.
Security Council approval is necessary to continue aid operations because the Syrian government does not allow any UN activity on its soil.
It should be noted that the Security Council initially approved the delivery of aid from two points in Iraq, Jordan and Turkey to rebel-held areas in 2014.
Russia and China had limited it to only one Turkish border point.
