Iran’s military has warned Iraq to secure its border and disarm Kurdish rebels in the Kurdistan Region by September 22.
“We will wait until September because the Iraqi government has promised until then,” says Major General Mohammad Bagheiri, the chief of Iran’s armed forces.
He said that if this deadline passes and the Kurdish rebels remain armed or continue their operations, we will intensify the operation against these groups.
According to foreign media reports, Iraq and Iran reached an agreement in March under which the two countries were to improve security cooperation, with border security at the heart of the agreement.
Last week, Iran’s Interior Minister Ahmad Vahidi met with his Iraqi counterpart Abdul Amir al-Shammari at the Mehran border and agreed to establish joint security points.
It should be noted that for a long time, Iran has accused the Kurdistan Regional Government of harboring armed rebel groups, which Iran considers to be terrorists.
