Pakistani Christian community demands severe punishment for those involved in the Sweden incident

Lahore: The Church of Pakistan strongly condemned the desecration of the Holy Quran and demanded the Swedish government to give severe punishment to all the people involved in the incident and the main accused.

The bishops and senior leadership of the Church of Pakistan, representing the Pakistani Christian community, on the issue of desecration of the Holy Quran, demanded the Swedish government to stop those involved in deliberate acts and punish the culprits severely. A statement issued by all 7 bishops of the Church of Pakistan said that anyone who believes in the holy books cannot condone such abominable acts as the desecration of the holy scriptures of any faith. “Freedom and expression should never be used to demean others,” the statement said.

In the statement, the president of the Church of Pakistan, Bishop Dr. Azad Marshall, said that these acts are committed by people who have no connection with any religion and they only do it to advance their personal interests. The Pakistani Christian community condemns such actions and wishes to assure our Muslim brothers that we understand their suffering and stand in solidarity with them.

He further said that ‘We have always raised our voice against such religious provocative actions and will continue to do so in the future. Such acts encourage hatred, exclusion and racism’. The statement said that resolutions were also presented in all major churches of the Church of Pakistan condemning the hateful incidents in Sweden and other European countries including France, Norway and Denmark.

In the statement, the Church of Pakistan has emphasized that the Christian community is engaged in service across the country regardless of race and color and every religion is respected by us. We have always taught interfaith harmony, tolerance and love and respect for each other’.
