King Willem-Alexander of the Netherlands apologized for the Netherlands’ past involvement in the enslavement of humans.
King William-Alexander was speaking at a ceremony to mark 160 years since the end of slavery in the Netherlands.
He said that today we remember the Dutch history of slavery, I apologize for the atrocities against humanity.
“Prejudice is still a problem in Dutch society and not everyone will support my apology,” he said.
“Times have changed and the chains have been broken,” said King William.
In 2020, King William also apologized for ‘uncontrollable atrocities’ during Dutch colonial rule in Indonesia.
