Construction of first road from recycled plastic in Karachi

The 730-feet long and 60-feet wide road has been constructed from over 2.5 tonnes of used lubricant plastic bottles.

Karachi: Shell Pakistan has constructed a road in Karachi by recycling plastic bottles used for Shell lubricants.

Shell Pakistan completed the construction of the road in collaboration with a start-up called BRR Enterprises and the District Municipal Corporation (South), which will also help reduce plastic waste and promote environment-friendly practices.

The 730-foot-long and 60-foot-wide road has been constructed from more than 2.5 tons of used Shell lubricant plastic bottles.

Asphalt road construction uses used lubricant bottles through a dry process that reduces plastic waste.

Being non-biodegradable and toxic, plastic is also hazardous to the environment. According to research, a simple plastic bag can take 500 years to decompose while a plastic bottle can take 300 years to decompose.

Compared to normal roads, plastic roads are three times more flexible and durable and also have a lifespan of about three times longer.

Moreover, the materials used for the construction of normal roads are very expensive while the plastic used is almost free of cost, which reduces the cost of road construction many times.

This invention is relatively more sustainable and also helps to deal with the problem faced by our society in the form of plastic waste.

Speaking at the inauguration of this newly constructed road in Karachi, Shell Pakistan Chief Executive and Managing Director, Waqar Siddiqui said: “This is the first time we have used our lubricants bottles to construct a stretch and see the result. I am incredibly happy.

He further said that this innovative method helps in reducing plastic waste and in future, Pakistan can also help in eco-friendly infrastructure projects. More such innovative solutions need to be tested and tried. And I hope that they will prove to be contributors in building a clean society.”
