A 49-year-old citizen of Indian origin residing in the US state of California smuggled 800 Indian citizens into the US through an online taxi.
Rajendra Pal Singh was sentenced to 3 years in prison after being found guilty of human trafficking.
The accused admitted in the court that he received more than 500,000 dollars as the main operative of the smuggling ring.
The US Department of Justice said in a press release that Rajendra Pal Singh brought hundreds of Indian citizens to the US from the Canadian border.
The accused was sentenced by the US District Court yesterday. Supervising Attorney Tessa Gorman said Rajender Singh trafficked more than 800 people over the northern border into Washington state and other cities over a four-year period.
Starting in July 2018, Rajinder Singh and his co-accused used Uber taxis to transport people crossing the US border illegally from Canada into the city of Seattle.
The investigation revealed that from July 2018 to April 2022, 17 Uber accounts were part of this trafficking network, which netted more than $80,000.
45,000 US dollars in cash and fake ID cards were recovered from the Indian-origin citizen’s house in California.
A Department of Justice press release stated that Rajinder Pal Singh is not currently living legally in the United States and will be deported after completing his sentence.
