Several women were injured during the stampede in Kemari area of Karachi, one of whom died in the hospital during treatment. The women had come to collect the money received under the Benazir Income Support Program.
According to police officials, money was to be distributed at a local school in Kemari when a stampede broke out at the main gate of the school, in which 20 women were injured.
The injured were immediately shifted to civil hospital by ambulances where a woman died during the treatment, the dead woman was identified as Shakila who was about 35 years old.
Some women fainted due to the intense heat, but they were immediately provided with medical aid.
A cash distribution camp was organized under Benazir Income Support Program at KPT School near Karachi Port Trust (KPT) Ground in Kemari.
After the incident, police and KPTK guards closed the gate of the school.
On the other hand, the people who came to receive Benazir Income Support said that earlier they used to get the money through ATM but now this method has been adopted.
He complained that even in the summer season they are made to wait for many hours while the money is also being given less.
Chairperson Benazir Income Support Program Shazia Murri took notice of the incident and held the private bank responsible, while Chief Secretary Sindh Sohail Rajput also took notice of the incident and issued instructions to the Commissioner Karachi to make appropriate arrangements.
