Federal Minister for Poverty Alleviation and Social Security and Chairperson Benazir Income Support Program (BISP) Shazia Murri has said that Pakistan has faced devastating floods in the past.

About 33 million people were displaced during the 2010, 2011, 2020 and recent floods, with 6,000 pregnant women directly affected.

However, the current government has successfully distributed cash assistance to those affected by the recent floods through the Benazir Income Support Programme.

He expressed these views in a panel discussion during the closing session of the Global Forum on Adaptive Social Protection held in Germany.

During the conversation, Ms. Shazia Murri emphasized the importance of protecting the backward and vulnerable sections of the society and discussed Pakistan’s efforts in this regard.

Shazia Murri said that BISP is working with provincial setups on social security measures to provide maximum benefits to the weaker sections of the society.

He expressed his willingness to share Pakistan’s experiences with the representatives of 58 countries present at the forum, also expressing the country’s commitment to global cooperation for social security.

Furthermore, the Federal Minister informed the audience about the National Socio-Economic Registry (NSRE) and said that the Benazir Income Support Program has a comprehensive database of more than 35 million households in Pakistan. This ensures that the social security program can develop better strategies to meet the needs of the beneficiaries more effectively.

He emphasized that an adequate social security program is essential to deal with crises like climate and natural calamities.

Shazia Murri thanked for sharing Pakistan’s experiences and achievements at the Global Forum.

He reiterated Pakistan’s determination to tackle the climate crisis and called for international cooperation to protect vulnerable countries from the effects of climate change.

The closing session was moderated by Connie Zemoch, independent international moderator and journalist. Other speakers included Svenja Schulze Federal Minister for Economic Cooperation and Development, BMZ, Esther Schuring, Social Security Adviser GIZ, Colin Andrews Program Manager World Bank and El Hadji Diouf.
