Cyclone may intensify in next 12 hours, NDMA

Cyclone Buparjoy has made landfall, just 600 km from Karachi, with wind speeds reaching 200 km/h in the center of the storm, waves 30 to 40 feet high.

The direction of the storm is currently towards Indian Gujarat, if the path changes, the entire coastal belt of Sindh, including Karachi, is likely to be affected.

Heavy rains of 300 to 400 mm are expected in coastal areas, waves of 10 to 12 feet high can be seen at Kati Bandar while gusts of up to 120 kmph are possible. The Meteorological Department has sounded the alarm.

The National Disaster Management Authority (NDMA) organized a National Coordination Conference on Cyclone Buparjoy. Which was chaired by Chairman NDMA Lieutenant General Inam Haider Malik.

In the meeting, possible threats and advance preparations were reviewed. Officials of Pakistan Navy, Secretary Sindh, Provincial Disaster Management Authority participated in the meeting. While the concerned officials of all federal and provincial institutions including Meteorology Department were also present in the meeting.

On this occasion, the head of the National Disaster Management Authority said that the direction of Cyclone Buparjoy is 600 km south of Karachi. Cyclone may intensify in next 12 hours.

He said that Cyclone Buparjoy is progressing at a speed of 160 to 180 kilometers per hour. According to the NDMA chief, the cyclone may affect southern and southeastern parts of Sindh by June 13-14. Hurricanes can bring strong winds, torrential rains and flooding to coastal areas.

According to NDMA, the progress of Buparjoy is continuously monitored through international models. June 13 to 17 Fishermen and tourists should be careful when venturing out into the open sea.

The NDMA also directed all the concerned agencies of the Federation, Balochistan and Sindh to be on high alert and said that the concerned agencies should ensure the presence of emergency machinery and medical personnel in the coastal areas.

Pakistan Navy and maritime affairs agencies should be more active in coastal surveillance. While the public should follow the instructions of the local administration in any emergency situation.

On the other hand, rains and strong winds are predicted to start tomorrow in Karachi, Hyderabad, Thatta, Mirpur Khas, and waves have affected the road in Mara.

Karachi is expected to receive up to 100 mm of rain, billboards have not been removed from buildings, Seaview Road has been closed up to Khayaban Ittihad and access to the beach has been banned.

Under the influence of the storm, the heat intensity increased in Karachi, from June 13 to 17, fishermen were prevented from going to the sea.
