At least 15 people were killed in an explosion near a mosque in northern Afghanistan at a memorial service for a Taliban provincial deputy governor, officials said. Abdul Nafi Thakur, appointed spokesman of the Ministry of Interior, said that a former Taliban police chief, Safiullah Samim, was also killed in the explosion near Masjid Nabawi on Thursday, while the total number of casualties is expected to increase.
According to the report of the news agency, the explosion occurred during the memorial ceremony of Badakhshan Deputy Governor Nisar Ahmad Ahmadi, who was killed in a car bomb blast on Tuesday. In this attack in Faizabad, the capital of Badakhshan, the driver of the deputy governor was also killed and 10 other people were injured.
Former Afghan President Hamid Karzai condemned the attack in a tweet, saying the mosque bombing was an act of ‘terrorism’ and was “against humanitarian and Islamic standards”.
No group immediately claimed responsibility for the attack, but Tuesday’s car bombing was claimed by the Islamic State (ISIS) militant group.
The Taliban administration has been cracking down on members of Daesh, which has claimed several major attacks in urban centers.
The group has targeted Taliban administration officials and claimed the death of the governor of northern Balkh province in an attack in March.
Taliban military chief Fasihuddin Fitr condemned the attacks in Badakhshan and asked people to cooperate with Taliban security forces and report suspicious activities in their areas.

Daesh’s regional affiliate – known as the Islamic State in Khorasan province – said at the time that it had carried out the attack. The group said he parked a car full of explosives on the road and detonated it while the police chief was nearby.
