US Vice President Kamala Harris made a statement regarding judicial reforms in Israel, which has received a strong response from the Israeli Foreign Minister.
Yesterday at the Israeli Embassy in Washington, Kamala Harris said that democracy in Israel needs an independent judiciary.
He said that the US will continue to support all the values that are key in Israel-US relations.
This includes strengthening our democracies, the US vice president said, just as the Israeli ambassador said that both countries’ democracies are based on strong institutions, accountability and, I would add, an independent judiciary.
She came to the embassy in connection with Israel’s 75th anniversary celebration.
Israel’s ambassador, Eli Cohen, strongly reacted to the US vice president’s statement this morning.
He said that the vice-president cannot tell even a single provision of judicial reforms in Israel, I don’t know if she even reads the bill or not, I think she doesn’t.
The Israeli foreign minister tweeted, “I have great respect for Kamala Harris, but judicial reform is an internal matter for Israel.”
He added that the State of Israel will remain democratic and independent as it has always been.
