Dam collapse in Ukraine: water enters city, high alert issued

Cafe: In southern Ukraine, one of the country’s main dams has collapsed, sending water into the city. Russian and Ukrainian authorities are busy evacuating citizens, launching emergency relief operations.

According to international media reports, a large dam has collapsed in the city of Kherson, Ukraine, causing flooding in nearby areas. There is a risk of crop destruction while drinking water supply is also threatened. Russia and Ukraine have blamed each other for the destruction of the dam.

Damage to the dam has flooded homes, streets and business buildings, and emergency crews have begun evacuating residents. Officials are monitoring water for the cooling system at the Zaporizhzhya nuclear plant. Officials have expressed concern over the supply of drinking water in areas controlled by Ukraine and Russia.

Russian and Ukrainian authorities are moving residents to safety using trains and buses. About 22,000 people are at risk of flooding in Russian-controlled areas, while 16,000 live in sensitive areas controlled by Ukraine. No civilian casualties or injuries have been reported by either side.
