Brooklyn, New York: Experts have given good news after a long study that an already used drug can prevent 50% of deaths in lung cancer patients.
The drug ‘Osimertinib’ has dramatically emerged as a magic pill for which a ten-year long follow-up has been described by doctors as extraordinary. The results were presented at a conference of the American Society of Oncology.
Yale University has conducted this study for a decade in 26 countries of the world, which included patients aged 30 to 86 who had lung cancer. It has been found to be useful in a type of lung cancer that kills about 1.8 million people worldwide every year.
25% of people with lung cancer have mutations in the EGFR gene, and 40% in Asia. Although this drug is only available to a few patients in the US and UK, it is expected to make osimertinib available globally.
People taking a pill of ‘Osimertinib’ daily are still alive and energetic five years after undergoing all kinds of surgery. Otherwise, even after the surgery, the patients would have died or relapsed into cancer.
Most importantly, osimertinib has been found to be equally effective in stage I, II and III lung cancer. It should be noted that another name of this drug is Tegriso.
