New Delhi: 50 people were killed and more than 300 injured after a passenger train derailed and collided with a freight train in the Balasore district of the Indian state of Orissa.
According to the foreign news agency “Reuters”, officials of the South Eastern Railway said on condition of anonymity that the number of casualties is likely to increase, the accident was extremely horrific.
According to reports, Coromandel Express (passenger train) from Kolkata to Chennai derailed and fell on the opposite track. Many people are still trapped, reports said.
South Eastern Railway General Manager Archana Joshi said that I cannot comment on the details and casualty figures as of now, I was in Delhi and trying to reach the accident site as soon as possible.
On the other hand, Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi said in a tweet that relief operations are underway and “all possible help” is being given to the affected people. West Bengal Chief Secretary HK Dwivedi told reporters that the collision was a “serious accident”.
