CIA director William Burns made a secret visit to Beijing last month.
According to a Chinese newspaper, the CIA director met with Chinese intelligence officials.
In this visit, the CIA chief emphasized the importance of keeping intelligence communications open between Washington and Beijing.
The British newspaper Financial Times also published a report about the visit.
The CIA director’s visit comes at a time when the Biden administration is looking to reshape bilateral relations with China.
There is tension between the two countries over the issue of Taiwan. In February, the US Air Force shot down a Chinese balloon on suspicion of espionage. China maintained that the balloon was sent to assess the weather situation.
Beijing had recently refused to meet the US Secretary of Defense, but an informal meeting between the Chinese Defense Minister and the US counterpart took place today at the ongoing Shangri-La conference in Singapore.
