Ankara: Turkey’s newly elected President Tayyip Erdogan agreed to restore diplomatic ties suspended for a decade in a telephone conversation with Egyptian President Abdel Fattah al-Sisi.
According to the World News Agency, after Tayyip Erdogan was elected president for the second time in a row, Egyptian President Abdel Fattah Al-Sisi telephoned the Turkish President and congratulated him, for which the Turkish President thanked his counterpart.
The two leaders discussed matters of mutual interest and agreed on the immediate restoration of diplomatic ties, which had been severed for a decade, and the appointment of ambassadors.
It should be noted that diplomatic relations between Egypt and Turkey were severed in 2013. Both countries expelled each other’s ambassadors and diplomatic relations were severed ever since.
However, for the past few months, backdoor negotiations between the two countries have been going on and last month, Egyptian Foreign Minister Sami Shoukry visited Turkey and met with his Turkish counterpart, Mevlut Cavusoglu.
In this meeting, the time frame for restoration of diplomatic relations was discussed. And a strategy was made for a meeting between the presidents of the two countries.
