The coast guard forces of the US, Japan and the Philippines will participate in trilateral naval exercises in the South China Sea for the first time.
The exercises will continue from June 1 to 7 with Australia participating as an observer.
Four ships from the Philippines and one each from the US and Japan will participate in the exercises.
These exercises are being conducted to improve cooperation in maritime law enforcement, search and rescue operations.
In February this year, the Philippines proposed joint naval exercises to Japan and the United States.
