According to foreign media reports, a passenger opened the door of a passenger plane in the city of Daegu, South Korea, a few minutes before landing at the airport, after which the South Korean police detained him.
According to media reports, the Airbus A321-200 landed safely at around 12:40 local time. The plane was about to land at Daegu Airport after an hour’s flight from Jeju Island when its door was opened.
An official of the Daegu Fire Department while talking to the media said that 9 teenage passengers on the plane collapsed due to the opening of the door, they were having difficulty breathing, due to which they were shifted to a local hospital.
Opening the emergency exit was possible because the plane was close to the ground and the pressure inside and outside the cabin was the same, the official said.
An Asiana spokesman said the plane’s emergency exit was opened 2 or 3 minutes before landing, at which time all passengers were wearing seat belts, which kept them safe.
They say a male passenger sitting next to the emergency exit opened a cover and pulled a lever, causing the door to open with the plane about 200 meters (656 feet) off the ground.
The Transport Ministry said in a statement that the police have detained the person who opened the door and authorities are investigating violations of aviation safety rules and investigating whether Asiana Airlines made an emergency stop. Whether the exit protocol has been followed or not.
