During the year 2022, the number of people who migrated to the UK was 666 thousand, this is a new record.
Jay Linzop, director of the UK’s Office for National Statistics (ONS), said international migration to the UK reached record levels during 2022 due to extraordinary global events and the lifting of restrictions caused by the coronavirus pandemic.
He said that the largest number of migrants were from non-European countries who came for employment, education and humanitarian reasons.
Refugees also include people who immigrated after Russia invaded Ukraine.
Britain had eased the entry rules for Hong Kong citizens holding British overseas passports, due to which Hong Kong citizens also came here in large numbers.
Since 2018, thousands of migrants have crossed the straits in small boats to the UK and applied for asylum.
Last year alone, 45,000 migrants arrived in Britain illegally by sea.
It should be noted that British Prime Minister Rishi Sonak has announced reforms last week according to which students coming from foreign countries will not be able to bring their families to Britain.
