Canada and Saudi Arabia have agreed to fully restore diplomatic relations and appoint new ambassadors.
According to a foreign news agency, Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau and Saudi Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman met at the Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation Forum held in Bangkok last November, during which the issue of restoring relations was discussed.
A Canadian government source said strict trade restrictions would be lifted.
It should be noted that after the death of journalist Jamal Khashoggi in 2018, the Canadian embassy in Riyadh tweeted to release the women’s rights activist arrested in Saudi Arabia.
After the tweet, Riyadh recalled its ambassador from Canada and banned further trade.
According to an official statement, today’s decision was taken due to the restoration of diplomatic relations by both sides and restoration of matters of common dignity and interest.
Canadian sources said that we have seen in recent years that Saudi Arabia is a major global power.
Sources said Saudi Arabia helped evacuate Canadians stranded in Sudan and is now seeking a solution to the conflict there.
Canada will appoint John Philip as its new ambassador to Riyadh.
