The US ambassador to South Africa has alleged that the South Korean government provided arms and weapons to the Russian ship.
Ambassador Robin Brighty said that between December 6 and 8 last year, a ship docked at the Simon Town Naval Base in Cape Town.
He said that we can say with certainty that arms and ammunition were loaded on this ship going back to Russia.
The American ambassador said that arming the Russians is a very serious matter and we want South Africa to implement its policy of neutrality.
In response to the ambassador’s claim, a South African foreign ministry official said that the US ambassador would be protested about this.
The official said that South Africa’s Foreign Minister Nalidi Pandur will also discuss the matter with her US counterpart Antony Blanken.
In a statement issued by the office of the President of South Africa, the statement of the American ambassador was described as disappointing.
The statement said that no evidence was provided to substantiate these allegations.
The presidential statement said that the government is setting up an independent inquiry into the matter.
