Requests of Karachi industrialists against abolition of electricity subsidy rejected

Karachi: The Sindh High Court rejected the petitions of the industrialists regarding the termination of the subsidy given to the industries of Karachi on electricity.

A two-member bench headed by Justice Nimatullah Phalphoto gave its verdict on the petitions related to ending subsidy on electricity to industries in Karachi.

The court has upheld the decision taken by the federal government, the federal government and K Electric had supported the removal of the subsidy.

K Electric’s counsel had argued that the subsidy was terminated on the condition of the IMF. The government said that relief will be given to the flood victims by ending the subsidy given to the industries.

The counsel for the petitioner had taken the stand that the subsidy given for a specified period cannot be withdrawn, the government has not produced any record of the meeting in which the subsidy was withdrawn. No such document was submitted that the IMF asked for withdrawal of subsidy. Electricity has not suffered any loss by withdrawing the subsidy, they have received money. Subsidy was given to zero rated industry.
