Taiwan is likely to receive $500 million worth of arms from the United States this year.
Beijing’s military exercises near Taiwan prompted the US to pass the Taiwan Policy Act in September, which would provide billions of dollars in military aid to Taipei.
But arms deliveries have so far been stalled, after Taiwan’s Defense Minister Chiu Kyung-cheng confirmed that Washington was discussing a separate accelerated arms delivery package.
The Defense Minister said that the $500 million package will provide weapons that are being delayed in our own country.
While he did not provide details on what kind of defense equipment would be included in the arms package, the defense minister said the details would be revealed by both sides soon.
It should be noted that the United States has been selling arms to Taiwan for decades, but last September, the United States signed an agreement that approved the provision of $4.5 billion in military assistance over a four-year period.
Last week, Taiwan’s Defense Ministry said Washington had confirmed that 66 F-16 fighter jets would be delivered in the third quarter of next year.
