The first annual National Social Security Conference was organized today under the aegis of Benazir Income Support Program (BISP). This 3-day conference is being organized in Murree from 8th to 10th May 2023 in collaboration with German organization GZ.
The opening session of the conference was chaired by Federal Minister for Poverty Alleviation and Social Security, Chairperson Benazir Income Support Program Shazia Murri.
The conference invited social security experts, representatives of international organizations and other stakeholders to discuss various social security initiatives and programs in Pakistan. The representative of the World Bank and the German Ambassador also addressed the conference through video link.
During the inaugural session, Federal Minister Shazia Murri highlighted the importance of Benazir Income Support Program in providing financial assistance to disadvantaged families in Pakistan.
He said that the Benazir Income Support Program is providing support to infants and their mothers from poor families for better nutrition and to address malnutrition. The program is also providing educational scholarships to needy children, which has resulted in an increase in the enrollment rate of children in schools.
He further said that the Benazir Income Support Program has become a ray of hope for millions of disadvantaged families across the country.
Shazia Murray thanked the World Bank, German Institute for International Cooperation (GIZE), Asian Development Bank (ADB), UNICEF and other supporting organizations for their financial and technical support.
He said that BISP is providing financial assistance to 9 million poorest families which is about 24% of the total population of Pakistan.
He said that despite these efforts, there is still a huge gap and a large number of poor people still look to the government for financial assistance.
The conference was also attended by the Chairman of National Database and Registration Authority (NADRA) and representatives of other international organizations.
He praised the Benazir Income Support Program as one of the most successful and transparent social security programs in the world.
