21 people, including children and women, were killed and many others went missing after a passenger boat capsized in the Malappuram district of the Indian state of Kerala.
According to Indian media, a boat named Shankara in Kerala illegally started the journey by carrying more people than the capacity due to the rush of passengers at night and this tragic accident took place near the shore of Tanur in Malappuram district.
According to eyewitnesses, more than 50 people were boarded in the boat with a capacity of 25 people.
The local authorities say that the rescue process was started as soon as the information was received, however, despite the difficulties in the rescue work due to darkness, the bodies of 21 people, including children and women, have been recovered.
According to the authorities, the rescued persons have been transferred to local hospitals, as the exact number of passengers on board the boat is not known, the search for the missing persons is ongoing.
Kerala Health Minister Veena George called an emergency meeting of the state health department at midnight after the incident and directed officials to ensure better treatment of the injured.
The Health Minister has directed to speed up the post-mortem process and better treatment of the injured.
On the other hand, the Indian Prime Minister has announced to give Rs. 2 lakh each to the families of those who died in the incident.
