London: An ingenious 12-year-old British schoolgirl has created a backpack that not only cleans and expels air around the wearer, but also runs on solar energy.

Eleanor Woods created the design for an engineering competition, but was inspired by her sick mother, who suffers from asthma and is disturbed by even the slightest air pollution. An air filter, fans and a dynamo are also installed inside this bag. Millions of people around the world will be able to benefit from this invention.

‘This backpack will help filter air as some of my friends and family suffer from asthma and respiratory problems,’ said Eleanor, who was awarded the prize for the invention.

The name of this competition is ‘Backpack to the Future Competition’ under which students up to 13 years of age have to design a backpack related to a scientific concept or invention. The competition is held nationwide in the UK, with hundreds of children participating.
