Washington: A study has shown that if antibiotics are given by feeding rather than by drip or injection, patients can shorten hospital stays, recover faster and hospital costs can be reduced.
Pneumonia patients in particular can not only recover faster but also reduce additional costs if they take antibiotics instead of injections. In this context, the Infectious Diseases Society of America (IDSA) has said this through a large-scale study.
Interestingly, despite this fact, people are more interested in injecting antibiotics than ingesting them. But it is a fact that if you take antibiotics instead of a drip or a shot, you may not even need these drugs for a long time.
In this regard, from 2010 to 2015, 642 hospitals across the United States have been evaluated. Patients who started oral medication within three days of diagnosis were included as early responders. Thus, the health of late presenting patients, length of hospital stay, incidence of ICU arrival and mortality were also carefully evaluated.
It was found that people who took oral antibiotics recovered faster and went home from the hospital sooner. Experts have said that new rules should be introduced around the world, especially for pneumonia patients, to encourage them to eat instead of antibiotics.
