Lahore: Consumer Courts in Punjab, the largest province of the country, are lagging due to lack of public interest and lack of proper awareness campaign of these courts and council by the government to the common man.
Punjab Consumer Protection Act in 2005 and Punjab Consumer Protection Rules in 2009 were framed, placed under the Department of Industries, Commerce, Investment and Skills Development, while Punjab Consumer Protection Council was established at director level in the province.
According to the records available to Express Tribune and Daily Express, 1200 to 1400 consumers approach consumer courts in Punjab for their problems due to lack of facilities and lack of effective awareness by the industry department.
There are currently 17 consumer courts functioning in the province, including Lahore, Sahiwal, Multan, Dera Ghazi Khan, Rawalpindi, Gujarat, Gujranwala, Bahawalpur, Sargodha, Faisalabad, while Bhakkar, Bahawalang, Leh, Mianwali, Rahim Yar Khan and Courts in Mandi Bahauddin are under process, so far 48740 cases have been filed in consumer courts of the province.
