Karachi: National Electric Power Regulatory Authority (NEPRA) Chairman Taseef Hasan Farooqui has urged K Electric to solve all the electricity related problems faced by the business community on priority.
Chairman Nepra along with Syed Munis Abdullah Alvi, Chief Executive Officer of K Electric, said in a meeting on the occasion of his visit to Karachi Chamber of Commerce and Industry that businessmen are fighting for the economic survival of Pakistan in a very difficult environment. The presence is a clear acknowledgment that there is a dire need to address the electricity related problems of the business community on top priority, K Electric will solve all the problems of the business community.
Chairman Nepra pointed out that Pakistan’s power sector is going through the worst situation despite the existing production capacity, the country is unable to generate electricity as funds are not available to buy imported fuels including furnace oil and coal for power generation.
He said that overall fuel prices in international markets have increased at least 8 times, the Pakistani rupee has also depreciated by more than half against the dollar, which means the overall impact on electricity rates should be 16 times higher. As 65% of the country’s electricity is being generated from imported fuel but NEPRA has not increased the tariff accordingly which is commendable, efforts are being made to generate cheap electricity but inclusion of green energy is a challenge.
Commenting on the blackout across the country, Chairman Nepra said that whenever such a blackout occurs, Nepra investigates to find out the reasons.
Commenting on the delay in installation of net metering facility for solar setup, Chairman NEPRA assured to include a section in the customer service manual of NEPRA under which all DISCOs including KE net metering within 3 months. Will be obliged to install the facility.
Chief Executive K Electric Munis Alvi said that a team from K Electric’s distribution network will be provided at KCCI to address all the issues faced by the business and industrial community. KE is performing best as compared to all other DISCOs as KE has processed maximum number of net metering requests.
Chairman Businessmen’s Group Zubair Motiwala mentioned the recent blackout in the country and said that this is the fourth time in the last 3 years that there has been a massive blackout in the country but the question arises whether anyone has been held accountable or not. The cause of the disaster has been investigated three times in the past and recently again. He said that the monopoly of K Electric has to be ended.
