Mumbai: 11 people died of heatstroke while 50 people were admitted to the hospital in case of emergency in an official function organized in open field and hot sun.
According to Indian media, the government held a ceremony for the distribution of awards in the capital Mumbai, in which about 1 million people participated. However, after waiting for hours in the hot sun and due to lack of effective arrangements in the field, 11 people died of heat stroke.
In addition, 50 people were transferred to the hospital in case of emergency, while the condition of 600 people deteriorated due to heat stroke. Temperature was recorded at 38 and humidity was also high.
Maharashtra Chief Minister Eknath Shinde, in a tweet on the social networking website, confirmed the deaths of 11 people and promised compensation to the families of the victims.
Senior government officials including Federal Home Minister Amit Shah also participated in the event and praised the crowd for waiting so long in the sun.
