Washington: US President Joe Biden’s administration has asked the Supreme Court to overturn lower court limits on access to abortion pills.
The high court was urged that Washington wants to protect reproductive rights in Republican-led states. The Justice Department filed a petition asking the Supreme Court justices to overturn the ruling by U.S. District Judge Matthew Koksmark in Texas.
Danco Laboratories, the maker of the abortion pill (mifepristone), sought similar relief from the US Supreme Court.
The Justice Department wrote in its petition that the court’s ruling would prevent women from accessing US Food and Drug Administration-approved abortion drugs, which would increase the trend toward unsafe surgical abortions.
The Justice Department said the lower courts’ orders could have far-reaching consequences for the pharmaceutical industry, women who need access to drugs, and the FDA’s ability to enforce its statutory authority.
