Famous Bollywood actress Shilpa Shetty got relief from the Mumbai Sessions Court in the obscenity case filed in 2007.
In 2007, an obscenity case was filed against American actor and social activist Richard Gere for kissing Shilpa Shetty in public during an AIDS awareness program in India.
The incident also led to widespread protests in India as many believed that it was an insult to Indian culture, and several cases were filed against the two actors under various sections of the Indian Penal Code and the Information Technology Act. were
The case was transferred to Mumbai after a long legal battle where the Metropolitan Magistrate dismissed the case filed against Shilpa Shetty.
The magistrate took this decision on the basis that the American actor kissed the actress against her will.
After which the Rajasthan Police filed an appeal against the dismissal and then the case was transferred to the Sessions Court in Mumbai.
In the Mumbai Sessions Court, Shilpa Shetty’s lawyer Prashant Patil pleaded to dismiss the appeal, saying that the case has been pending for a long time and there is no evidence of the actress spreading obscenity.
Now the Mumbai sessions court has dismissed the criminal revision filed by the state, ending the 16-year-old case.
