One Million Iraqis Disappeared in Half a Century, United Nations

New York: During the half-century of Saddam Hussein’s dictatorial regime, the US-led invasion of the country and the rise of the terrorist organization Daesh in the region, up to one million people, including a large number of children, have gone ‘missing’.

According to international media, the United Nations report estimates that between 250,000 and 1 million people have disappeared since 1968. Disappearances continued even after the US invasion in 2003. At least 200,000 Iraqis were arrested, half of whom remained in US or British-run prisons. After the end of the war, a new wave of terrorism came to the land of Iraq in the form of ISIS, which includes forced disappearance of children.

The report also stated that many people were arrested without warrants for their involvement in insurgent activities, while other arrested civilians were simply guilty of being in the wrong place at the wrong time.

The UN committee called on Iraq to set up an independent task force to ensure that the list of detainees and their families are informed of their whereabouts while tracing the missing. And the criminals should be punished.

As Iraqi law does not define “enforced disappearance” as a crime, the United Nations said Iraq should implement basic laws to prevent, eradicate and restore peace to this heinous crime.

In the aforementioned report, there is no immediate response from Iraq to the demands of the current Iraqi government of the United Nations.
