Russia took over the presidency of the UN Security Council despite the Ukraine war.
As a permanent member of the Security Council, Russia has been given the presidency for the month of April. Despite Ukraine’s complaints, the US said it could not prevent Russia – a permanent member of the council – from assuming the presidency.
The other permanent members of the council are the United Kingdom, the United States, France and China.
According to Ukrainian Foreign Minister Dmytro Koliba, Russia’s presidency of the UN Security Council for the month of April is “a slap in the face of the international community”.
In a statement on Twitter, Koliba called Russia’s “UNSC chairmanship illegitimate”.
The last time Russia held the presidency was February 2022 and launched an all-out invasion of Ukraine. The Security Council has 15 members and each holds the presidency of the Council for a month.
