Brussels: The European Union has threatened to impose visa restrictions on non-repatriation of illegal immigrants from various countries, including Pakistan.

European Commission chief Ursula van der Leyen has written a letter to the leaders of the EU member states in which illegal immigrants from Pakistan, Bangladesh, Egypt, Morocco and many other countries have been mentioned.

The letter calls for the EU to draw up a list of safe countries in the region and tighten border controls on the Mediterranean and Western Balkans routes that migrants use to reach Europe.

The European Union plans to sign agreements on migrants with countries such as Pakistan, Bangladesh, Egypt, Morocco, Tunisia and Nigeria to improve the return process.

The letter from the European Commission chief has been sent ahead of the EU summit on February 9 and 10.
