The screening of a BBC documentary on Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi was banned in India.
According to foreign media reports, a documentary film based on Gujarat has been banned by the students of Delhi’s famous university ‘Jawahirlal Nehru University’.
This BBC documentary highlights the role of then minister Narendra Modi in the 2002 communal riots in the state of Gujarat in which more than 1,000 minority Muslims were massacred.
According to media reports, the Indian authorities not only stopped the screening of the film but also issued a warning to them that if they disobeyed the instructions of the authorities, they would have to face strict measures.
It should be noted that the two-part BBC documentary cites a secret report from the former British Foreign Office, which quoted anonymous sources as saying that Modi met with senior police officers and ordered them to told them not to interfere in the attacks on Muslims.
The documentary also states that the violence was ‘politically motivated’, with the aim of ‘cleansing Hindu areas of Muslims’.
31 Muslims were also convicted of criminal conspiracy and murder over the incident.
