IMF's considerations on petrol subsidy for low-income earners

Islamabad: The International Monetary Fund (IMF) has expressed concern over the government’s announcement of subsidizing petrol for low-income earners.

IMF representative Esther Perez has said in a statement that the government of Pakistan has not consulted or contacted the International Monetary Fund on the scheme related to motorcycle and vehicle owners regarding the prices of petroleum products.

Esther Perez said that the IMF staff wants comprehensive details in this regard, the details of which will be carefully discussed with the government regarding the terms and conditions of the scheme, cost, targeting, misuse of the scheme and other measures.

It should be noted that Minister of State for Petroleum Dr. Mossadegh Malik announced on Sunday that on the instructions of Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif, a subsidy of Rs. 100 will be given on petrol for motorcyclists and the scheme will be implemented in 6 weeks. .

Furthermore, Esther Peres has said in the ongoing statement regarding the staff level agreement that there has been substantial progress in the negotiations to proceed with the 9th economic review.

He further said that policy discussions have been held with the Pakistani authorities in recent days, ensuring adequate funding to support the implementation of the policy agenda is the top priority. .
