The day for the elimination of racial discrimination is being celebrated all over the world today.
On this day in 1960, police opened fire on a peaceful protest against apartheid laws in Sharpwell, South Africa, killing 69 people and injuring 180.
Proclaiming this day in 1966, the United Nations General Assembly called upon the international community to redouble its efforts to eliminate all forms of racial discrimination.
On the other hand, regarding this day, the head of European foreign affairs, Josep Borrell, has said that modern Europe, diversity is built on bringing nations together and overcoming divisions.
He said that it is based on a strong legal framework against racial discrimination, but it needs continuous protection and promotion.
He said that the European Union will spare no effort to combat racism and ethnic discrimination within its borders with all its resources.
“We will also work with all partners in bilateral and multilateral forums to promote human rights for all as clearly defined in the UDHR,” said Josep Borrell.
He further said that the fight against racism is a legal, political and moral duty because all human beings are entitled to all human rights everywhere at all times without any discrimination.
