The Taliban banned the cultivation of cannabis in Afghanistan.
According to the decree issued by the Taliban leader Haibatullah Akhonzada, the cultivation of cannabis has been banned across the country. In case of violation, the hemp crop will be destroyed and the growers will be prosecuted under Sharia laws.
The statement issued by the Taliban leader further said that the courts have been instructed to take action against those guilty of violating the decree under Sharia laws.
According to the United Nations, Afghan farmers grow the largest poppy crop, and in 2010, Afghanistan became the largest supplier of opium, hashish and heroin.
According to the report of the United Nations Drug Agency, hemp and poppy crops were cultivated annually on an area of ten to twenty four thousand hectares in Afghanistan. Seventeen of Afghanistan’s thirty-four provinces were the largest producers of narcotic crops.
Before coming to power, Taliban fighters are said to have earned hundreds of millions of dollars by enforcing taxes on poppy farmers and providing safe passage to smugglers.
It should be noted that the trade of hashish, opium and heroin from Afghanistan has seriously affected its neighbors, including Pakistan, where large quantities of drugs are smuggled every year.
