Kyoto: 15 people were killed and more than 100 were injured in the 6.7 magnitude earthquake in the South American countries of Ecuador and Peru, while dozens of buildings were completely destroyed.
According to the World News Agency, earthquakes of magnitude 6.8 were felt in the southern region of Ecuador’s second largest city, Guayaquil. Earthquakes of the same intensity were felt in the northern region of Peru.
The US Geological Survey said the epicenter was about 50 miles (80km) south of Ecuador’s coastal region of Goyas. The population of this area is more than 3 million.
The tremors of the earthquake were felt in Ecuador and Peru, but the loss of life and property was more in Ecuador. No tsunami alert was issued after the earthquake.
Due to the tremors of the earthquake, two major cities of both countries were shaken and dozens of buildings were destroyed. The work of evacuating the people buried under the debris is going on. So far, 14 deaths have been confirmed in Ecuador and one in Peru.
In Ecuador, the number of injured exceeded 125 and the death toll is expected to rise, while in Peru more than a dozen people were injured.
It should be noted that earthquakes are common in the coastal areas of Ecuador. More than 600 people died in an earthquake in 2016.
