Seafood, nuts and vegetables may reduce the risk of dementia

London: One study found that a diet rich in seafood, whole grains, nuts and vegetables can reduce the risk of dementia by 25 percent.

In a study published in the journal BMC Medicine, experts concluded that people who eat a Mediterranean diet are significantly less likely to develop dementia.

According to experts, the research findings also show how important other lifestyle factors, along with diet, are in relation to the risk of developing the disease.

In the study, researchers studied data from more than 60,000 people aged 60 years and older. Participants were asked for details about 206 types of foods and 32 types of beverages in the study. These individuals were subsequently screened for consumption of a restricted Mediterranean diet. The study, which lasted nearly a decade, involved 882 cases of dementia.

Those who regularly ate the Mediterranean diet had a 23 percent lower risk of developing dementia than those who did not regularly eat the diet.
