Ankara: 14 people have been killed so far due to heavy floods in the earthquake affected area of Turkey.
According to international media, many people in areas affected by last month’s 7.8-magnitude earthquake have succumbed to floods on Wednesday, while local areas turned into mud and rivers.
Hundreds of thousands of Turks who survived the earthquake were moved into tents and containers in the disaster zone covering 11 provinces in southeastern Turkey. However, floods occurred in the areas due to torrential rains yesterday.
Turkish officials said 12 people, including a 1-year-old child, were killed by floods in the city of Sanliurfa alone, about 30 miles (50 kilometers) north of the Syrian border, and the death toll is expected to rise. Five are still missing. The Turkish Meteorological Department has expressed fear that the rains will continue.
It should be noted that the February 6 earthquake killed more than 48,000 people in Turkey and nearly 6,000 in Syria, which was the deadliest earthquake in the region in recent times.
