Columbia, Missouri: A study has revealed that mice can also be infected with the alpha, delta and omicron variants of the corona virus.
A study published in the American Society for Microbiology has found that the coronavirus has infected wild rats in New York City.
In the study, researchers discovered a possible link with viruses that were circulating in humans during the early days of the global pandemic.
The US Department of Agriculture and the Animal and Plant Health Inspection Service analyzed samples from 79 Norwegian rats for evidence of Covid-19 infection. Out of 79 samples obtained, 13 mice tested positive for Covid.
The study revealed that alpha, delta and omicron variants can cause infection in mice.
Dr. Henry Wayne, a professor at the University of Missouri, said that this is the first study of its kind to show that coronavirus variants can infect wild mice in large parts of urban areas of the United States.
It should be noted that the number of wild rats in New York is around 8 million.
