The Chinese government is considering gradually increasing the retirement age in view of the country’s growing elderly population.
According to Chinese state media, a senior expert at the Ministry of Human Resources said that China will take a progressive, simple and different path on the issue of retirement age.
Jin Weigang, president of the Chinese Academy of Labor and Social Security, said that initially the retirement age will be increased by a few months, with further increases later.
China is to officially announce a change to the retirement age, which is currently the lowest in the world.
Here, men retire at 60, women in white-collar jobs at 55, while women in factories retire at 50.
The new Prime Minister of the country, Lee Kiang, said that after research and analysis in this regard, the government will announce the policy.
According to China’s National Health Commission, by 2035, the number of people over the age of 60 in the country will increase to 40 million from the current 28 million.
This number of senior citizens will be equal to the total population of the United States and the United Kingdom.
