Pentagon Blocks Submission of Details of Russian War Crimes to International Court, US newspaper

US Department of Defense (Pentagon)

According to the American newspaper, the Pentagon is not willing to submit details of the war crimes committed by Russia in Ukraine to the International Criminal Court.

According to the New York Times report, the White House and the State Department are in favor of cooperating with the International Court of Justice in the Netherlands to hold Russian forces accountable for war crimes, but the Defense Department is opposing this cooperation.

The Department of Defense says that this move will become an example for future actions against the US military.

Former government officials said the Pentagon’s opposition was an obstacle to providing details of Russian war crimes to the International Court of Justice.

The National Security Council called a meeting of senior officials on Feb. 3 to try to resolve the issue, but Defense Secretary Lloyd Austin disagreed, and President Joe Biden has yet to make a final decision.

Republican Senator Lynsey Graham passed a resolution in Congress that the United States should take steps to support Ukraine in the International Criminal Court against Russia. He also blamed the Pentagon for this pending issue.

He said the Department of Defense had opposed legislative progress on the issue, but it passed overwhelmingly, and now they are trying to push for a legislative resolution.

The U.S. fears that if it presents information on Russian war crimes to the International Criminal Court, the same law could later apply to U.S. soldiers fighting foreign wars.
