Jogging once a month can strengthen memory in old age

London: A new study has found that jogging even once a month is enough to strengthen memory in old age.

In a study, scientists from University College London studied the exercise habits of 1,400 people over a period of 30 years.

In the study, when each person reached the age of 69, tests were taken to test their memory, attention, language and verbal fluency.

Individuals who were moderately active—participating in physical activity one to four times per month—had better memory than those who exercised less.

A period of at least 30 minutes of activities such as playing badminton, swimming, exercising for fitness, dancing, yoga, playing football, jogging or brisk walking was counted as an exercise bout.

During the study, participants filled out a questionnaire on five occasions at ages 36, 43, 53, 60 to 64 and 69.

Overall, 11 percent of participants were not physically active on all five occasions, while 15 percent did some exercise on all occasions. The majority of the group said they exercised at least twice a month.

Previous studies have shown that regular exercise can reduce the risk of dementia by a third.
