The Art of Career Reinvention. Waqas Sultan Ahmed

Career-hopping is now becoming a trend among young professionals, but the million-dollar question remains: how many have actually cracked the code and found success on the other side? For those making the leap from social sciences to data science, the challenge is especially daunting. It’s like trying to solve a puzzle blindfolded.

Entering the field of technology without formal education is challenging, but Waqas Ahmad Sultan braved the challenges. From wanting to join the army to studying Peace and Conflict Studies and then becoming a Data Scientist at CEBS, his path has been one of determination, self-education, and hard work. In a special interview, Waqas spoke about his challenges, victories, and recommendations for young professionals who want to switch careers.

A  CAREER START IN THE UNKNOWN:

Waqas had started his higher education in pre-medical but was soon faced with a juncture. After several failed attempts, the wish to pursue a career in the army was shelved based on physical restrictions. Unsure but driven, he then studied Peace and Conflict Studies (PCS), a decision which would later influence his problem-solving and adaptability.

CEBSLEAP INTO TECHNOLOGY:

Although he had a social science background, Waqas was interested in the capabilities of artificial intelligence and data science. Having no computer science background, he decided to learn on his own for one and a half years. He learned Python, algorithms, and machine learning on his own from online resources specifically, YouTube classes.

“One of the toughest obstacles I overcame was becoming a computer professional without a university degree. The imposter syndrome was real, but I knew that self-teaching and resilience were my best qualities.”

THE FIRST STEP

With the new skills but no professional experience, Waqas encountered another dilemma: securing his first job. In order to gain practical experience, he opted for an unpaid internship, something that is hesitantly done by many due to monetary limitations. He saw it, however, as an investment for his future, which would enable him to have working experience and connections in the field. “There were times when I doubted whether this was the correct way, but with each line of code that I wrote and each problem that I solved, I gained confidence.”

THE BREAKTHROUGH

Following months of diligent efforts and constant learning, Waqas was employed as a Data Scientist at CEBS. The experience was out of this world, what appeared to be an impossible dream had become a reality. When asked about the instance when he knew he had achieved it, he smiled and said,

“When I finally cracked my first true-world data problem at the office, I felt like all my work had paid off, but there is still a long way ahead”

ADVICE FOR ASPIRING CAREER CHANGERS
Waqas realizes why so many individuals are afraid of a career shift, but the message is out: “It’s never too late. Practice, learn, and have confidence in yourself. The IT business values skills and problem-solving above degrees.” For those who are interested in data science, he suggests tracking industry trends on platforms like Medium, and LinkedIn. He also mentions networking and involvement in open-source projects as crucial steps towards gaining reputation in the field.

LOOKING AHEAD: THE FUTURE OF DATA

As data science is expanding worldwide, Waqas feels that Pakistan has tremendous potential. “There are more opportunities in AI-based solutions, fintech, and e-commerce. Young professionals should look into these areas and be a part of the revolution.”

If anything can be learned from Waqas Ahmad Sultan’s story, it’s that perseverance and improvisation can prevail over even the most unexpected hurdles. From PCS to Python, from being turned down to being acknowledged, his path motivates those willing to chart their own course, no matter how bizarre it may seem.
